The Robert Bosch Stiftung is one of the major German foundations associated with a private company and has managed the philanthropic bequest of company founder Robert Bosch for over 50 years. Indeed it was his entrepreneurial vision, political farsightedness, moral fortitude and charitable initiatives that set the standards for the work of the Robert Bosch Stiftung.
The Culture Programme has been established to enhance the cultural area shared by Europeans, which is based on a common cultural heritage, through the development of cooperation activities among cultural operators from eligible countries, with a view to encouraging the emergence of European citizenship. The collective Les Grandes Personnes (meaning both “the tall people” as in giant puppets and “the adults” as in responsible persons) is born in 1998. It is currently housed in Aubervilliers near Paris, France at the Villa Mais d’Ici, a “neighbourhood cultural development zone”.
Its vocation is to bring sculpture to the public, and its creations are a fusion of visual and performance art. The history of the company, which began with building and performing with giant puppets, reflects its special interest in sculpture and folk art. Combining drama and the visual arts to tell stories, it uses sculpted objects as a narrative tool. The show À la corde (“By a thread”) played in recent years involves passing sculptures from person to person, accompanied by phrases that are transmitted by the spectators to each other. Drawing on folk sculpture and traditional toys, it turns puppets and objects into machines for the imagination. The work of Les Grandes Personnes aims to shift the boundaries separating visual art and performance art, art and folk art, art and craftwork.
A team that numbers up to 30 artists regularly work within this non-profit organization : visual artists, painters, builders, actors, circus performers and so on.

A history of the collective relates what was created or performed during fourteen years, using papier-mâché and other materials both innovative and traditional. Furthermore, the collective has been developing workshops intended to bring sculpture and art to underprivileged areas : “sculpture for all”.
In the past fourteen years the collective has taken part in numerous festivals and parades in France and abroad. It has helped to build several associations, from Boromo in Burkina (Les Grandes Personnes d’Afrique) to Valparaiso in Chile, or South Africa (Giant Match Association) that keep a number of families of giants alive.
